Security
in Cuba: although Cuba is a country with
a low criminal rate, precautions must be taken to
avoid thieves and pickpockets expecting some negligence
in the control of personal objects, like wallets,
cameras, suitcases and portfolios. In the streets
there are enough police if something is needed.
Advice for tourists:
when they go out for a walk just bring the necessary
money; pay attention to your personal objects and
shopping bags; in public places with agglomeration
put your wallet and passport in the front pocket
of the trousers; always check the bill in the restaurants;
distrust the improvised "tour guides"
they’re not professionals, many do not know
the Cuban history and culture, and they are just
friendly to cheat the tourists; keep your jewels
and values in the hotel safe box.
Tours: the urban
buses - among them the "camello" - are
always full and their frequency is unpredictable.
The best thing is to use taxis, tourist buses or
by foot if the distances are short. If you wish
to cross the island, the best thing is to rent a
car. In order to rent one you must present the passport
an international driver license, and a minimum age
of 21 years old. It is recommended not to travel
by night, and to take care with the animals in the
countryside and with the bikers in the urban zones.
